Bunaken National Marine Park
The Bunaken National Park is famously known for its beautiful underwater life. You can go snorkeling and diving and meet various marine species. The national park consists of several small islands, among a few are Bunaken, Siladen, Taman Laut Tumbak, Malalayang Beach, Lembeh Strait and Gangga Island. Go island hopping and don’t forget to bring along a waterproof camera.
Ban Hin Kiong Temple
Visit the oldest Chinese temple from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in Manado where the Tridharma pilgrims come to pray. The temple is located on D.I. Panjaitan Street, and is surrounded by Chinese shops and shrines. You can get there by taking public transportation. Rent a car or a motorbike to explore the town.
Bukit Kasih Kanonang
About 55 kilometers to the south of Manado lies Bukit Kasih, one of the top destinations in North Sulawesi. You can reach the top of the hill by climbing over 2000 steps where a magnificent view of the natural surroundings awaits. Then, experience one of the hot springs around the area and visit a historical site of Watu Pinawetengan.
Modoinding (900 to 1,600 meters above the sea level) embraces agritourism. This is where vegetables and spices for the eastern part of Indonesia come from. On the east side of Modoinding is a valley with Moat Lake and Bukit Doa. The area is home to the Ambang National Park where you can go birdwatching and see some golden owls.
Tangkoko Natural Reserve
This national park is home to primates, such as macaques and tarsius. You can see tarsius between 4 PM to 6 PM when they are most active. A tour guide is available at the entrance to explain all about the park. Tangkoko Natural Reserve is about 50 kilometers from Manado. You can take public transportation to get there.
Mount Mahawu Volcano Trek
Go trekking in the Mount Mahawu Volcano for an adventure. It takes one hour to hike from the mountain base to the crater. The mountain top boasts a remarkable view of Bunaken Islands, Manado Tua Island and Manado Bay. At the bottom of the crater lies a lake with sulfur aroma. Then, go to Lake Tondano to have lunch.
Highland of Minahasa
A tour around the Minahasa highland lets you discover how the Minahasan traditional houses are built in the Woloan Village. Here, you will get to taste some traditional food and visit a flower market in Tomohon. See some arts and crafts like pottery-making in the Pulutan Village and relax at Lake Linow which is known for its changing color.
Not far from Manado on your way up to Tomohon, you can stop by Kali Waterfalls in the Kali Village. The rural area offers beautiful natural surroundings where you can take a scenic walk to the waterfall. Unwind by the waterfall as long as you want. Don’t foget to capture some photos.
